IB Biology Syllabus Changes in 2026: What Is New

9 min readOliver Kidd (Co-founder)4 Nov 2026

There is no brand-new IB Biology syllabus in 2026. The big change came with the course whose first assessment was in 2025, and 2026 students sit the same guide for the second time. If your revision notes, past papers or textbook come from the older course, that is where the gaps will appear. We have written this to help you spot them calmly and fix them early.

TL;DR

  • 2026 is not a syllabus-change year for Biology. The current guide was first assessed in 2025, so the 2026 session uses the same course.
  • Content is built around four themes and four levels of biological organisation, and the old option topics have been removed.
  • Chemistry and Physics were also reorganised in the same revision cycle, so older notes and past papers need checking against the current guide.
  • The safest preparation is to revise from material mapped to the current guide and to practise with exam-style questions.

Is 2026 a new syllabus year?

No. Many students search for “2026 changes” because the revised sciences feel new, and for a Year 12 or Year 13 student they are. But the guide you study from in 2026 is the one the IB labels as first assessment 2025. The IB’s May 2026 examination schedule lists Biology HL and SL Paper 1 and Paper 2, which matches the current course structure.

This matters for two reasons. First, the older course still circulates online, and its notes and past papers do not map neatly onto today’s topics. Second, because the course is only in its second exam session, there is less published exam history than students are used to. Practice material written to the current guide is therefore worth more than a stack of older papers.

If you want to see how the course is laid out topic by topic, our IB Biology syllabus page follows the current guide.

What changed in IB Biology

The current Biology guide is organised in a new way. According to the IB Biology guide, content is arranged into four themes:

  • Unity and diversity
  • Form and function
  • Interaction and interdependence
  • Continuity and change

These themes run across four levels of organisation: molecules, cells, organisms and ecosystems. So a single idea, such as energy transfer, can appear at several levels. The guide puts a strong focus on conceptual understanding, experimental skills and the Nature of Science, and it removes the separate option topics that older cohorts studied.

SL and HL share this concept-based syllabus, the Nature of Science, the experimental programme, the scientific investigation and the collaborative sciences project. HL asks for greater knowledge and understanding, and the guide describes it as a solid foundation for further study at university.

What this means for your revision

Stop revising in neat, separate chapters. Questions are likely to ask you to connect ideas across levels, for example from a molecular process to its effect on an ecosystem. When you finish a topic, ask yourself where else it appears. Flashcards and notes that link topics together will serve you better than isolated lists.

The internal assessment

The internal assessment is now the scientific investigation. The report has a maximum of 3,000 words, taken from the IB guide. Start planning your research question early, and keep your data and method notes tidy as you go. Our guide to practical work and the internal assessment walks through how to approach it.

What about IB Chemistry and IB Physics?

Students often ask about all three sciences together, so here is the honest picture. Chemistry and Physics were revised in the same cycle as Biology, and both have restructured content compared with the older courses. Neither has a fresh syllabus launched for 2026. As with Biology, the practical risk is revising from older topic lists or past papers that no longer match how the current guide groups its content.

The habit that helps in all three subjects is the same:

  1. Download the current subject guide from the IB and keep it open while you revise.
  2. Tick off each statement as you learn it, rather than each old chapter.
  3. Check that every past paper or question set you use is labelled for the current course.
  4. Ask your teacher if you are unsure whether a topic is still examined.

For Chemistry, you can practise under exam conditions with our IB Chemistry mock exams.

How to prepare for the 2026 exams

Here is a plan that works for students, parents and teachers alike.

For students. Work through the guide statement by statement. Test yourself early, because retrieval practice shows you what you do not yet know. Spaced repetition is a good fit for the volume of HL Biology content, and using AI for studying wisely can help you build and review cards without handing your thinking over to a tool.

Four icons for Biology revision practices

For parents. You do not need to teach the content. You can help by asking which guide statements are still unticked, and by making sure your child practises exam-style questions regularly instead of only rereading notes. Our page for IB parents explains how progress tracking makes those conversations easier.

For teachers and schools. Check that class resources are labelled for the current guide, and spread practice across themes rather than topics. Syllabus monitoring and performance analytics help you see which parts of the course a class is finding hardest.

Our perspective

Every year we see students lose marks, not because they lack ability, but because they practised on material that did not match the exam in front of them. That is why our resources are written by IB examiners and built around the current guide.

We believe the revised sciences reward students who can connect ideas, so we made our notes, videos, flashcards, questions, tests and mock exams link to each other. A student can move from a weak spot in their results straight to the note, the video and the questions that fix it. We are not aware of another IB STEM platform that joins these pieces together with the same progress tracking and performance insights.

Confidence grows when you can see your own progress. Our student-led answer review, using examiner mark schemes, lets you learn what a full-mark answer looks like, and our analytics show where to spend the next hour.

FAQ

Did the IB Biology syllabus change for the 2026 exams?

No new syllabus starts in 2026. The 2026 exams use the guide first assessed in 2025, which organises content into four themes and four levels of organisation and has no option topics. The IB Biology guide is the official reference.

Can I still use older IB Biology past papers?

You can, but with care. Older papers were written for a different structure, so some questions will not match what you now study. Use them selectively for topics that appear in both courses, and rely on questions labelled for the current guide for the rest.

Are Chemistry and Physics different in 2026 too?

Both were revised in the same cycle as Biology, so their content is grouped differently from the older courses. There is no further new syllabus for 2026. Check your resources against the current subject guides from the IB.

Where can I find the Biology exam timetable?

The IB publishes it as an official document. The May 2026 examination schedule lists Biology HL and SL Paper 1 and Paper 2. Always confirm your own dates with your school’s IB coordinator.
