Exponents

This topic introduces the laws of exponents, particularly integer exponents and rational exponents.

An exponent tells us how many times a base is multiplied by itself. For example, 34=3×3×3×33^4=3\times3\times3\times3.

If the base is negative, brackets matter. For example:

  • (2)3=8(-2)^3=-8
  • (2)4=16(-2)^4=16
  • 24=16-2^4=-16 because the exponent acts on the 22 first, then the negative sign is applied.
