Exponents

This topic introduces the laws of exponents, the meaning of logarithms, and the key logarithm laws you need to know. Integer exponents, rational exponents, logarithms with base 1010 and base ee, change of base, and solving exponential equations are all to be expected on your exam.

An exponent tells us how many times a base is multiplied by itself. For example,

34=3×3×3×33^4=3\times3\times3\times3

If the base is negative, brackets matter.

  • (2)3=8(-2)^3=-8
  • (2)4=16(-2)^4=16
  • 24=16-2^4=-16 because the exponent acts on the 22 first, then the negative sign is applied.
