Exponents

This topic introduces the laws of exponents, the meaning of logarithms, and the key logarithm laws you need to know. Integer exponents, rational exponents, logarithms with base $10$ and base $e$ , change of base, and solving exponential equations are all to be expected on your exam.

An exponent tells us how many times a base is multiplied by itself. For example,

$3^4=3\times3\times3\times3$

If the base is negative, brackets matter.

$(-2)^3=-8$
$(-2)^4=16$
$-2^4=-16$ because the exponent acts on the $2$ first, then the negative sign is applied.
